Two operations on vector fields are set up in this section. Both behave much like differentiation, and both are basic tools once vector calculus is applied to fluid flow or to electricity and magnetism.
What separates them is the kind of object each returns. The first, the curl, sends a vector field to another vector field; the second, the divergence, sends a vector field to a scalar field.
$\mathbf F=P\,\mathbf i+Q\,\mathbf j+R\,\mathbf k$를 $\mathbb R^3$ 위의 벡터장이라 하고 $P,Q,R$의 편도함수가 모두 존재한다고 하자.
Equation (1) — the curl of a vector field. Let $\mathbf F=P\,\mathbf i+Q\,\mathbf j+R\,\mathbf k$ be a vector field on $\mathbb R^3$ for which all the partial derivatives of $P$, $Q$, $R$ exist. The curl of $\mathbf F$ is the vector field on $\mathbb R^3$
Each entry is a difference of two first partial derivatives, and the three entries follow one cyclic pattern: the $\mathbf i$-entry differentiates in $y$ and $z$, the $\mathbf j$-entry in $z$ and $x$, the $\mathbf k$-entry in $x$ and $y$. The output is again a vector field on $\mathbb R^3$, not a number.
$\nabla$를 스칼라함수에 작용시키면 기울기 $\nabla f=f_x\,\mathbf i+f_y\,\mathbf j+f_z\,\mathbf k$를 얻는다.
Operator notation makes Equation (1) easy to recall. Introduce the vector differential operator $\nabla$, read “del”:
Acting on a scalar function it returns the gradient, $\nabla f=f_x\,\mathbf i+f_y\,\mathbf j+f_z\,\mathbf k$. Treating $\nabla$ instead as a vector whose three entries are the partial-derivative symbols, one may also form its formal cross product with a vector field:
Expanding this determinant along the first row reproduces the three components of Equation (1) exactly, which gives the symbolic form recorded as Equation (2):
Remembering the determinant is therefore the shortest route to the definition.
Theorem 3. Let $f$ be a function of three variables whose second-order partial derivatives are all continuous. Then
The gradient of such an $f$ is itself a vector field on $\mathbb R^3$, so its curl can be formed; the theorem says that the result is the zero vector at every point of the domain.
Proof. Since $\nabla f=f_x\,\mathbf i+f_y\,\mathbf j+f_z\,\mathbf k$, substituting $P=f_x$, $Q=f_y$, $R=f_z$ into the defining formula (1) for the curl expresses each component of $\operatorname{curl}(\nabla f)$ as a difference of second-order mixed partial derivatives.
Each entry compares the same second-order partial derivative taken in the two possible orders. Since all second-order partial derivatives of $f$ are assumed continuous, Clairaut's Theorem applied three times gives $f_{zy}=f_{yz}$, $f_{xz}=f_{zx}$, and $f_{yx}=f_{xy}$, so every entry vanishes. Hence $\operatorname{curl}(\nabla f)=\mathbf 0$.
정리 3의 배후에 있는 항등식은 §12.4의 한 사실, 즉 모든 3차원 벡터 $\mathbf a$에 대해 $\mathbf a\times\mathbf a=\mathbf 0$이라는 사실의 유비이다.
A conservative field is by definition one that can be written as $\mathbf F=\nabla f$, so Theorem 3 may be restated as a statement about conservative fields:
In practice the contrapositive is what gets used: a field whose curl differs from $\mathbf 0$ somewhere cannot be conservative. This is a cheap way to rule out conservativeness, since it only asks for three partial-derivative differences.
The identity behind Theorem 3 is the analogue of a fact from §12.4: $\mathbf a\times\mathbf a=\mathbf 0$ holds for every three-dimensional vector $\mathbf a$, and here the “vector” crossed with itself is $\nabla$.
Theorem 4. Let $\mathbf F$ be a vector field whose domain is the whole of $\mathbb R^3$ and whose components $P$, $Q$, $R$ have continuous partial derivatives. If $\operatorname{curl}\mathbf F=\mathbf 0$, then $\mathbf F$ is conservative.
The converse of Theorem 3 is false in general; what saves it here is the domain. Being defined on the whole of $\mathbb R^3$ is more than is really needed — a simply-connected domain, one that “has no hole”, already suffices.
Theorem 4 is the three-dimensional counterpart of Theorem 16.3.6, which settled the same question for plane fields.
Proof: sketched at the end of §16.8, where it is deduced from Stokes' Theorem.
$\mathbf F=\sin y\,\mathbf i+\cos x\,\mathbf j$에 대해서는 $\operatorname{curl}\mathbf F=-(\sin x+\cos y)\,\mathbf k$를 얻는데, 이는 대부분의 점에서 $\mathbf 0$이 아니다.
The name curl points at rotation. Read $\mathbf F$ as the velocity field of a moving fluid, as in Example 16.1.3. It is shown in §16.8 that the particles sitting near a point $(x,y,z)$ tend to turn about the axis through that point in the direction of $\operatorname{curl}\mathbf F(x,y,z)$, the sense of the turning being fixed by the right-hand rule, and that the length of that curl vector records how fast they go around.
Where $\operatorname{curl}\mathbf F=\mathbf 0$ at a point $P$, no rotation is present at $P$ and $\mathbf F$ is said to be irrotational there: a tiny paddle wheel dropped in at $P$ is carried along by the fluid but does not spin about its own axis. If instead $\operatorname{curl}\mathbf F\ne\mathbf 0$, the wheel does spin.
Two plane velocity fields make the contrast visible. For $\mathbf F=\sin y\,\mathbf i+\cos x\,\mathbf j$ one computes $\operatorname{curl}\mathbf F=-(\sin x+\cos y)\,\mathbf k$, which is nonzero at most points: at a point $P_1$ where the fluid runs in roughly one direction but faster on one side of the point than the other, the wheel turns counterclockwise and the curl vector points along $\mathbf k$; at a point $P_2$ where the turning is clockwise, it points along $-\mathbf k$.
For $\mathbf F=2xy\,\mathbf i+(x^{2}+y)\,\mathbf j$, on the other hand, $\operatorname{curl}\mathbf F=\mathbf 0$ at every point, and a wheel placed anywhere drifts with the fluid without ever turning about its axis.
$\mathbf F=P\,\mathbf i+Q\,\mathbf j+R\,\mathbf k$를 $\partial P/\partial x$, $\partial Q/\partial y$, $\partial R/\partial z$가 모두 존재하는 $\mathbb R^3$ 위의 벡터장이라 하자.
Equation (9) — the divergence of a vector field. Let $\mathbf F=P\,\mathbf i+Q\,\mathbf j+R\,\mathbf k$ be a vector field on $\mathbb R^3$ for which $\partial P/\partial x$, $\partial Q/\partial y$ and $\partial R/\partial z$ exist. Its divergence is then the function of three variables
Reading $\nabla$ once more as a vector of partial-derivative symbols, the same three terms are exactly what a formal dot product produces, and this is the symbolic form recorded as Equation (10):
A field on $\mathbb R^2$ is treated the same way, with only the two surviving terms, so that its divergence is a function of two variables.
The two operations of this section differ in type, and the difference is worth fixing in mind: $\operatorname{curl}\mathbf F$ is a vector field, whereas $\operatorname{div}\mathbf F$ is a scalar field.
$\mathbf F=P\,\mathbf i+Q\,\mathbf j+R\,\mathbf k$를 성분함수 $P,Q,R$가 연속인 이계 편도함수를 갖는 $\mathbb R^3$ 위의 벡터장이라 하자.
임의의 벡터 $\mathbf a,\mathbf b$에 대해 스칼라 삼중곱 $\mathbf a\cdot(\mathbf a\times\mathbf b)$가 $0$이 되는 것과 같이, $\operatorname{div}\operatorname{curl}\mathbf F$는 $\nabla\cdot(\nabla\times\mathbf F)$이다.
Theorem 11. Let $\mathbf F=P\,\mathbf i+Q\,\mathbf j+R\,\mathbf k$ be a vector field on $\mathbb R^3$ whose components $P$, $Q$, $R$ have continuous second-order partial derivatives. Then
Since $\operatorname{curl}\mathbf F$ is again a vector field on $\mathbb R^3$, its divergence may be formed; the theorem says that this scalar field vanishes identically, whatever $\mathbf F$ was.
Here too there is an algebraic analogue: the scalar triple product $\mathbf a\cdot(\mathbf a\times\mathbf b)$ equals $0$ for all vectors $\mathbf a$ and $\mathbf b$, and $\operatorname{div}\operatorname{curl}\mathbf F$ is $\nabla\cdot(\nabla\times\mathbf F)$.
Proof. By the defining formula (1), $\operatorname{curl}\mathbf F=(R_y-Q_z)\,\mathbf i+(P_z-R_x)\,\mathbf j+(Q_x-P_y)\,\mathbf k$, so by the defining formula (9) for the divergence, differentiating these three entries in $x$, $y$, $z$ respectively and adding gives
Pairing these six second-order partial derivatives by which function and which pair of variables they involve splits the sum into three pairs, $R_{yx}-R_{xy}$, $Q_{xz}-Q_{zx}$, and $P_{zy}-P_{yz}$. Since $P$, $Q$, $R$ all have continuous second-order partial derivatives, Clairaut's Theorem makes each pair equal, so all three vanish and $\operatorname{div}\operatorname{curl}\mathbf F=0$.
벡터장 $\mathbf F=-x\,\mathbf i+y\,\mathbf j$는 다르게 행동한다.
The name divergence is best understood through fluid flow as well. If $\mathbf F(x,y,z)$ gives the velocity of a fluid or a gas, then $\operatorname{div}\mathbf F(x,y,z)$ is the net rate, per unit volume and with respect to time, at which mass leaves the point $(x,y,z)$. Put loosely, the number measures how strongly the fluid tends to spread away from that point. A field for which $\operatorname{div}\mathbf F=0$ is called incompressible. The justification for this reading comes at the end of §16.9, as a consequence of the Divergence Theorem.
Take the plane field $\mathbf F=(1+x^{2})\,\mathbf i+y\,\mathbf j$, whose divergence is $2x+1$ and so is not identically zero. Near a point $P_1$ at which $\operatorname{div}\mathbf F$ is negative, the arrows arriving at the point are longer than those leaving it, so the flow there is inward on balance; near a point $P_2$ at which $\operatorname{div}\mathbf F$ is positive, the lengths compare the other way and the flow is outward.
The field $\mathbf F=-x\,\mathbf i+y\,\mathbf j$ behaves differently: its divergence is $0$ everywhere, and around any point the arrows that arrive and the arrows that leave have about the same length.
Combining the two operations in one particular order produces a third operator. Take a function $f$ of three variables, form its gradient field, and then take the divergence of that field:
This sum of the three unmixed second partial derivatives turns up so often that it gets the abbreviation $\nabla^{2}f$, and the operator
is called the Laplace operator, the name coming from its role in Laplace's equation $\nabla^{2}f=0$.
The operator applies to a vector field $\mathbf F=P\,\mathbf i+Q\,\mathbf j+R\,\mathbf k$ as well, simply by acting on each component separately:
$\mathbf F=P\,\mathbf i+Q\,\mathbf j$를 세 번째 성분이 $R=0$인 $\mathbb R^3$ 위의 벡터장으로 보자.
$\mathbf k\cdot\mathbf k=1$이고 $\mathbf i\cdot\mathbf k=\mathbf j\cdot\mathbf k=0$이므로 $(\operatorname{curl}\mathbf F)\cdot\mathbf k=Q_x-P_y$를 얻는다. 그린 정리를 $\oint_C P\,dx+Q\,dy=\iint_D\Bigl(\dfrac{\partial Q}{\partial x}-\dfrac{\partial P}{\partial y}\Bigr)dA$의 형태로 적용하면 우변의 피적분함수가 바로 방금 구한 $(\operatorname{curl}\mathbf F)\cdot\mathbf k$이므로
Equation (12) — Green's Theorem in curl form. Let the plane region $D$, its boundary curve $C$ and the functions $P$ and $Q$ satisfy the hypotheses of Green's Theorem, and put $\mathbf F=P\,\mathbf i+Q\,\mathbf j$. Then
In words: the line integral around $C$ of the tangential component of $\mathbf F$ equals the double integral over $D$ of the component of $\operatorname{curl}\mathbf F$ perpendicular to the plane.
Nothing new is being proved here — the curl and the dot product only repackage the integrand $\partial Q/\partial x-\partial P/\partial y$ of Green's Theorem — but the repackaged statement is the one that generalizes: Stokes' Theorem in §16.8 is exactly Equation (12) with $D$ replaced by a surface in space.
Proof. View $\mathbf F=P\,\mathbf i+Q\,\mathbf j$ as a vector field on $\mathbb R^3$ whose third component is $R=0$. Because $R$ vanishes identically, $R_x=R_y=0$; because $P$ and $Q$ depend only on $x$ and $y$, $P_z=Q_z=0$. So only one entry of the defining formula (1) survives:
Because $\mathbf k\cdot\mathbf k=1$ while $\mathbf i\cdot\mathbf k=\mathbf j\cdot\mathbf k=0$, this gives $(\operatorname{curl}\mathbf F)\cdot\mathbf k=Q_x-P_y$. On the other hand, by the definition of the line integral $\oint_C\mathbf F\cdot d\mathbf r=\oint_C P\,dx+Q\,dy$, and since $d\mathbf r=\mathbf T\,ds$ this equals $\oint_C\mathbf F\cdot\mathbf T\,ds$ as well. Applying Green's Theorem in the form $\oint_C P\,dx+Q\,dy=\iint_D\Bigl(\dfrac{\partial Q}{\partial x}-\dfrac{\partial P}{\partial y}\Bigr)dA$, the integrand on the right is exactly the $(\operatorname{curl}\mathbf F)\cdot\mathbf k$ found above, so
$C$가 $a\le t\le b$에서 벡터방정식 $\mathbf r(t)=x(t)\,\mathbf i+y(t)\,\mathbf j$로 그려진다고 하자.
그린 정리의 가정 아래, $\mathbf n$을 $C$를 따르는 바깥 단위법선이라 하고 $\mathbf F=P\,\mathbf i+Q\,\mathbf j$라 하면
먼저 $\mathbf n(t)=\dfrac{y'(t)}{|\mathbf r'(t)|}\,\mathbf i-\dfrac{x'(t)}{|\mathbf r'(t)|}\,\mathbf j$가 실제로 바깥을 향하는 단위법선임을 확인하자.
A companion formula records the normal component of $\mathbf F$ instead of the tangential one. Suppose $C$ is traced by the vector equation $\mathbf r(t)=x(t)\,\mathbf i+y(t)\,\mathbf j$ for $a\le t\le b$. Its unit tangent vector was found in §13.2:
Exchanging the two entries and reversing one sign turns $\mathbf T$ into a unit vector perpendicular to it, and the choice of sign that points away from the region gives the outward unit normal vector:
Equation (13) — Green's Theorem in divergence form. Under the hypotheses of Green's Theorem, with $\mathbf n$ the outward unit normal along $C$ and $\mathbf F=P\,\mathbf i+Q\,\mathbf j$,
So this version equates the integral along $C$ of the component of $\mathbf F$ normal to the curve with the double integral of $\operatorname{div}\mathbf F$ over the region that $C$ encloses. It is the plane ancestor of the Divergence Theorem of §16.9, just as Equation (12) is the plane ancestor of Stokes' Theorem.
Proof. First check that $\mathbf n(t)=\dfrac{y'(t)}{|\mathbf r'(t)|}\,\mathbf i-\dfrac{x'(t)}{|\mathbf r'(t)|}\,\mathbf j$ really is an outward unit normal. Since $\mathbf n\cdot\mathbf T=\dfrac{x'y'-y'x'}{|\mathbf r'|^{2}}=0$, $\mathbf n$ is perpendicular to $\mathbf T$, and $|\mathbf n|=\dfrac{\sqrt{(y')^{2}+(-x')^{2}}}{|\mathbf r'|}=1$, so it is a unit vector. As for direction, the map $\langle x',y'\rangle\mapsto\langle y',-x'\rangle$ is rotation through $90^\circ$ clockwise, so $\mathbf n$ is $\mathbf T$ turned clockwise — the vector pointing to the right of the direction of travel. When $C$ carries the positive orientation, the region $D$ always lies to the left of that direction (the convention of §16.4), and a vector pointing right therefore points out of $D$. The counterclockwise unit circle $\mathbf r(t)=\langle\cos t,\sin t\rangle$ is the model case: $\mathbf T(t)=\langle-\sin t,\cos t\rangle$, and the formula gives $\mathbf n(t)=\langle\cos t,\sin t\rangle$, which points away from the origin, that is, outward.
Now Equation 16.2.3, which converts an arc-length line integral into an integral over the parameter $t$, gives
and the last integral is exactly $\displaystyle\oint_C P\,dy-Q\,dx$. Reading this as $\oint_C(-Q)\,dx+P\,dy$, the coefficient of $dx$ is $-Q$ and the coefficient of $dy$ is $P$, so Green's Theorem applied to that pair gives
Combining the two computations yields $\oint_C\mathbf F\cdot\mathbf n\,ds=\iint_D\operatorname{div}\mathbf F(x,y)\,dA$.

벡터장 $\mathbf F(x,y,z)=xz\,\mathbf i+xyz\,\mathbf j-y^{2}\,\mathbf k$ 에 대하여 회전 $\operatorname{curl}\mathbf F$를 구하라.
$\mathbf F=xz\,\mathbf i+xyz\,\mathbf j-y^{2}\,\mathbf k$이므로 성분함수는 $P=xz,\ Q=xyz,\ R=-y^{2}$이다.
따라서 $\operatorname{curl}\mathbf F=-y(x+2)\,\mathbf i+x\,\mathbf j+yz\,\mathbf k$이다.
Determine $\operatorname{curl}\mathbf F$ for the field $\mathbf F(x,y,z)=xz\,\mathbf i+xyz\,\mathbf j-y^{2}\,\mathbf k$.
Solution. Here $\mathbf F=xz\,\mathbf i+xyz\,\mathbf j-y^{2}\,\mathbf k$, so the component functions are $P=xz$, $Q=xyz$, $R=-y^{2}$. Compute the three entries of the defining formula (1) one at a time.
Hence $\operatorname{curl}\mathbf F=-y(x+2)\,\mathbf i+x\,\mathbf j+yz\,\mathbf k$.
예제 1에서 구한 회전을 이용하여, 벡터장 $\mathbf F(x,y,z)=xz\,\mathbf i+xyz\,\mathbf j-y^{2}\,\mathbf k$ 가 보존적 벡터장이 아님을 보여라.
예제 1에서 $\operatorname{curl}\mathbf F=-y(x+2)\,\mathbf i+x\,\mathbf j+yz\,\mathbf k$를 얻었다. 이를테면 점 $(1,1,1)$에서는 $\operatorname{curl}\mathbf F=-3\,\mathbf i+\mathbf j+\mathbf k\neq\mathbf 0$이므로, $\operatorname{curl}\mathbf F$는 정의역 전체에서 항등적으로 $\mathbf 0$이 아니다.
Using the curl found in Example 1, show that the field $\mathbf F(x,y,z)=xz\,\mathbf i+xyz\,\mathbf j-y^{2}\,\mathbf k$ fails to be conservative.
Proof. Example 1 found $\operatorname{curl}\mathbf F=-y(x+2)\,\mathbf i+x\,\mathbf j+yz\,\mathbf k$. At the point $(1,1,1)$, for instance, this equals $-3\,\mathbf i+\mathbf j+\mathbf k\neq\mathbf 0$, so $\operatorname{curl}\mathbf F$ is not identically $\mathbf 0$ on the domain. By (the contrapositive of) Theorem 3, a conservative field must satisfy $\operatorname{curl}\mathbf F=\mathbf 0$ everywhere; since that fails here, $\mathbf F$ cannot be conservative.
벡터장 $\mathbf F(x,y,z)=y^{2}z^{3}\,\mathbf i+2xyz^{3}\,\mathbf j+3xy^{2}z^{2}\,\mathbf k$ 에 대하여 다음에 답하라.
(a) $\mathbf F=y^{2}z^{3}\,\mathbf i+2xyz^{3}\,\mathbf j+3xy^{2}z^{2}\,\mathbf k$의 성분함수는 $P=y^{2}z^{3}$, $Q=2xyz^{3}$, $R=3xy^{2}z^{2}$이다.
Consider the field $\mathbf F(x,y,z)=y^{2}z^{3}\,\mathbf i+2xyz^{3}\,\mathbf j+3xy^{2}z^{2}\,\mathbf k$.
(a) Verify that this field is conservative.
(b) Produce a potential function for it, that is, a function $f$ satisfying $\nabla f=\mathbf F$.
(a) The field $\mathbf F=y^{2}z^{3}\,\mathbf i+2xyz^{3}\,\mathbf j+3xy^{2}z^{2}\,\mathbf k$ has components $P=y^{2}z^{3}$, $Q=2xyz^{3}$, $R=3xy^{2}z^{2}$. Computing the three entries of the defining formula (1),
so $\operatorname{curl}\mathbf F=\mathbf 0$. The components of $\mathbf F$ are defined on all of $\mathbb R^3$ with continuous partial derivatives, so the hypotheses of Theorem 4 hold, and $\mathbf F$ is conservative.
(b) Build an $f$ with $\nabla f=\mathbf F$ by the partial-integration method of §16.3. Integrating $f_x=y^{2}z^{3}$ with respect to $x$ gives $f(x,y,z)=xy^{2}z^{3}+g(y,z)$, the constant of integration now being an arbitrary function $g(y,z)$ of the remaining variables. Differentiating in $y$ gives $f_y=2xyz^{3}+g_y(y,z)$, which must equal $Q=2xyz^{3}$, forcing $g_y=0$, i.e., $g=h(z)$. Then $f_z=3xy^{2}z^{2}+h'(z)$ must equal $R=3xy^{2}z^{2}$, forcing $h'(z)=0$, i.e., $h$ is constant. Hence
works, for any constant $K$.
예제 1과 같은 벡터장 $\mathbf F(x,y,z)=xz\,\mathbf i+xyz\,\mathbf j-y^{2}\,\mathbf k$ 에 대하여 발산 $\operatorname{div}\mathbf F$를 구하라.
예제 1과 같은 $\mathbf F=xz\,\mathbf i+xyz\,\mathbf j-y^{2}\,\mathbf k$에서 $P=xz,\ Q=xyz,\ R=-y^{2}$이다.
Determine $\operatorname{div}\mathbf F$ for the field of Example 1, namely $\mathbf F(x,y,z)=xz\,\mathbf i+xyz\,\mathbf j-y^{2}\,\mathbf k$.
Solution. For the same field $\mathbf F=xz\,\mathbf i+xyz\,\mathbf j-y^{2}\,\mathbf k$ as in Example 1, $P=xz$, $Q=xyz$, $R=-y^{2}$. By the defining formula (9), $\dfrac{\partial P}{\partial x}=z$, $\dfrac{\partial Q}{\partial y}=xz$, and $\dfrac{\partial R}{\partial z}=0$, so
Hence $\operatorname{div}\mathbf F=z+xz$.
벡터장 $\mathbf F(x,y,z)=xz\,\mathbf i+xyz\,\mathbf j-y^{2}\,\mathbf k$ 에 대하여, 어떤 벡터장 $\mathbf G$를 가져와도 $\mathbf F=\operatorname{curl}\mathbf G$가 될 수 없음을 보여라.
Show that no vector field $\mathbf G$ can satisfy $\operatorname{curl}\mathbf G=\mathbf F$ when $\mathbf F(x,y,z)=xz\,\mathbf i+xyz\,\mathbf j-y^{2}\,\mathbf k$; that is, this $\mathbf F$ is not the curl of any vector field.
Proof. Example 4 gave $\operatorname{div}\mathbf F=z+xz$. At $(0,0,1)$, for instance, this equals $1\neq0$, so $\operatorname{div}\mathbf F$ is not identically $0$. If $\mathbf F=\operatorname{curl}\mathbf G$ for some vector field $\mathbf G$, then Theorem 11 would force $\operatorname{div}\mathbf F=\operatorname{div}\operatorname{curl}\mathbf G=0$, contradicting $\operatorname{div}\mathbf F\neq0$ just established. So no such $\mathbf G$ exists, and $\mathbf F$ cannot be written as the curl of any vector field.

A mismatch of unit boundaries — in the lecture notes the three-dimensional $\operatorname{curl}\mathbf F$ and $\operatorname{div}\mathbf F$ are placed in Unit 14, the unit on Stokes' Theorem and the Divergence Theorem, rather than in Unit 12.
