Green's Theorem links two integrals that live in different dimensions: a line integral taken once around a simple closed curve $C$ in the plane, and a double integral over the region $D$ that $C$ encloses.
Throughout the section $D$ is understood to consist of every point lying inside $C$ together with the points of $C$ itself, so the curve is the boundary of the region rather than something separate from it.
A simple closed curve $C$ is said to carry its positive orientation when it is traversed exactly once counterclockwise, as in panel (a) below.
Described through a parametrization $\mathbf r(t)$, $a\le t\le b$, the orientation is positive precisely when the enclosed region $D$ lies to the left of the moving point $\mathbf r(t)$ at every instant. Panel (b) shows the opposite choice, the negative (clockwise) orientation, which §16.2 writes as $-C$.
Green's Theorem. Let $C$ be a piecewise-smooth simple closed curve in the plane carrying its positive orientation, and let $D$ be the region that $C$ bounds. Suppose $P$ and $Q$ are functions whose partial derivatives exist and are continuous on some open region containing $D$. Then
For the plane field $\mathbf F=P\,\mathbf i+Q\,\mathbf j$ the left-hand side is nothing but $\int_C\mathbf F\cdot d\mathbf r$, so the theorem may equally be read as a statement about the work done by $\mathbf F$ once around $C$.
The hypotheses on $C$ are exactly the three words in the statement: simple (no self-crossings), closed, and piecewise smooth. A proof is available whenever $D$ is a simple region; that argument is carried out below, and the general case is considerably harder.
Two shorthands signal that a closed curve is being run through in the positive direction. One is the ring on the integral sign, $\oint_C P\,dx+Q\,dy$; the other names the positively oriented boundary of $D$ by the symbol $\partial D$.
Equation (1). With the boundary written as $\partial D$, the conclusion of Green's Theorem takes the form
Written this way the region sits on the left and its boundary on the right, which is the shape the next card compares with the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus.
Green's Theorem deserves to be read as the double-integral counterpart of the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus. Set equation (1) beside Part 2 of that theorem,
Each equality has an integral of derivatives on one side — $F'$ in the one-variable case, $\partial Q/\partial x$ and $\partial P/\partial y$ in the plane case — and on the other side only values of the original functions ($F$, and $P$ together with $Q$) taken on the boundary of the domain of integration.
For an interval that boundary shrinks to the two endpoints $a$ and $b$, which is why the right-hand side of the one-variable statement is a difference of two numbers rather than an integral. For a plane region the boundary is a whole curve $\partial D$, so an integral is what appears there.
한편 경계 $C$를 원문 Figure 3처럼 네 조각으로 나누자 — $C_1$은 $y=g_1(x)$를 따라 $x=a$에서 $x=b$로 가는 아래쪽 곡선, $C_2$는 $x=b$에서 위로 올라가는 수직선분, $C_3$는 $y=g_2(x)$를 따라 $x=b$에서 $x=a$로 되돌아가는 위쪽 곡선, $C_4$는 $x=a$에서 아래로 내려가는 수직선분이다. $C_1$은 $x=x,\ y=g_1(x)$ ($a\le x\le b$)로 곧바로 매개변수화되고, $C_3$는 향을 뒤집은 $-C_3$가 $x=x,\ y=g_2(x)$ ($a\le x\le b$)이므로 $\displaystyle\int_{C_3}P\,dx=-\int_{-C_3}P\,dx=-\int_a^b P(x,g_2(x))\,dx$이다.
A proof of the theorem in full generality is out of reach here, but one case is manageable: that in which $D$ is a simple region, meaning a region that qualifies as a type I region and as a type II region at the same time (§15.2).
It is enough to establish the two halves
and then add them. Writing $D$ as a type I region $\{(x,y)\mid a\le x\le b,\ g_1(x)\le y\le g_2(x)\}$ turns the double integral in (2) into a single integral by the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus, and splitting $C$ into four pieces evaluates the line integral; comparing the two results gives (2). Equation (3) comes out the same way from the type II description, and adding (2) and (3) produces Green's Theorem.
Proof. Write $D$ also as a type I region $\{(x,y)\mid a\le x\le b,\ g_1(x)\le y\le g_2(x)\}$, with $g_1$ and $g_2$ continuous. Applying the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus to the inner variable first,
Now split the boundary $C$ into the four pieces of the textbook's Figure 3: $C_1$ is the lower curve $y=g_1(x)$ run from $x=a$ to $x=b$; $C_2$ is the vertical segment at $x=b$, travelled upward; $C_3$ is the upper curve $y=g_2(x)$ travelled back from $x=b$ to $x=a$; and $C_4$ is the vertical segment at $x=a$, travelled downward. On $C_2$ and $C_4$ the variable $x$ is constant, so $dx=0$ and neither contributes (either one may shrink to a single point, and the contribution is still $0$). The piece $C_1$ is parametrized directly by $x=x,\ y=g_1(x)$, $a\le x\le b$, while it is the reversed piece $-C_3$ that is given by $x=x,\ y=g_2(x)$, $a\le x\le b$, so $\displaystyle\int_{C_3}P\,dx=-\int_{-C_3}P\,dx=-\int_a^b P(x,g_2(x))\,dx$. Hence
The same integral $\int_a^b\bigl[P(x,g_2(x))-P(x,g_1(x))\bigr]\,dx$ stands on both right-hand sides, carrying opposite signs, and that is equation (2), $\displaystyle\int_C P\,dx=-\iint_D\frac{\partial P}{\partial y}\,dA$.
The same idea proves (3) once $D$ is written as a type II region $\{(x,y)\mid c\le y\le d,\ h_1(y)\le x\le h_2(y)\}$. The Fundamental Theorem gives
and splitting the boundary into the right edge $x=h_2(y)$ (traversed upward, with $D$ on its left), two horizontal segments where $dy=0$, and the left edge $x=h_1(y)$ (traversed downward) gives
which is equation (3). Since $D$ is a simple region both descriptions apply, so adding (2) and (3) gives
which is Green's Theorem for the simple region $D$.
In Examples 1 and 2 the double integral is the cheaper of the two sides, and that is the usual situation. Now and then the traffic runs the other way, and the line integral is what one would rather compute.
Here is a case where the reverse reading costs nothing. Suppose it is known that $P$ and $Q$ both vanish at every point of the curve $C$. Then
and this conclusion holds no matter what values $P$ and $Q$ take at the interior points of $D$.
$(P,Q)=(0,x)$이면 $Q_x-P_y=1-0=1$이고 $\displaystyle A=\oint_C x\,dy$이다.
$(P,Q)=(-y,0)$이면 $Q_x-P_y=0-(-1)=1$이고 $\displaystyle A=\oint_C(-y)\,dx=-\oint_C y\,dx$이다.
$(P,Q)=\bigl(-\tfrac12y,\tfrac12x\bigr)$이면 $Q_x-P_y=\tfrac12-\bigl(-\tfrac12\bigr)=1$이고 $\displaystyle A=\oint_C\Bigl(-\frac12y\Bigr)dx+\frac12x\,dy=\frac12\oint_C x\,dy-y\,dx$이다.
세 등식을 모으면 식 (5) $\displaystyle A=\oint_C x\,dy=-\oint_C y\,dx=\frac12\oint_C x\,dy-y\,dx$가 된다.
Computing areas is a second use of the reverse direction. The area of $D$ equals $\iint_D 1\,dA$, so the task is to pick $P$ and $Q$ making the integrand of Green's Theorem identically $1$:
Three convenient choices are $(P,Q)=(0,x)$, $(P,Q)=(-y,0)$, and $(P,Q)=\bigl(-\tfrac12 y,\tfrac12 x\bigr)$, and each one turns the theorem into an area formula.
Equation (5) — area from a boundary line integral. If $C$ is the positively oriented boundary of $D$, then the area $A$ of $D$ satisfies
Which of the three is most convenient depends on the parametrization at hand; the symmetric third form is often the tidiest, as Example 3 shows.
Proof. Since the area of $D$ is $A=\iint_D 1\,dA$, substituting any $P,Q$ with $Q_x-P_y\equiv1$ into Green's Theorem gives directly $A=\displaystyle\oint_C P\,dx+Q\,dy$. Try the three choices in turn.
With $(P,Q)=(0,x)$, $Q_x-P_y=1-0=1$ and $\displaystyle A=\oint_C x\,dy$.
With $(P,Q)=(-y,0)$, $Q_x-P_y=0-(-1)=1$ and $\displaystyle A=\oint_C(-y)\,dx=-\oint_C y\,dx$.
With $(P,Q)=\bigl(-\tfrac12y,\tfrac12x\bigr)$, $Q_x-P_y=\tfrac12-\bigl(-\tfrac12\bigr)=1$ and $\displaystyle A=\oint_C\Bigl(-\frac12y\Bigr)dx+\frac12x\,dy=\frac12\oint_C x\,dy-y\,dx$.
Collecting the three equalities produces equation (5), $\displaystyle A=\oint_C x\,dy=-\oint_C y\,dx=\frac12\oint_C x\,dy-y\,dx$.
A planimeter is a mechanical instrument, invented in the nineteenth century, that reports the area of a region once a pointer has been walked around its boundary curve. A biologist wanting the area of a leaf or of a bird's wing could reach for one.
In the polar version the pole stays fixed while the tracer follows the boundary; the small wheel then partly slides and partly rolls in the direction perpendicular to the tracer arm. What the instrument actually records is the distance the wheel rolls, and that distance turns out to be proportional to the enclosed area. Formula (5) is what accounts for the proportionality.
Although the proof above covers only a simple $D$, the conclusion survives for any $D$ that is a finite union of simple regions with no overlap.
Take $D=D_1\cup D_2$ with both pieces simple, and suppose the boundaries are $\partial D_1=C_1\cup C_3$ and $\partial D_2=C_2\cup(-C_3)$, so the shared arc $C_3$ gets traversed once in each direction. Apply the theorem to $D_1$ and to $D_2$ separately and add the two equations: the contributions of $C_3$ and $-C_3$ cancel and what is left is
which is exactly Green's Theorem for $D$, whose boundary is $C=C_1\cup C_2$. Repeating the same bookkeeping over more pieces settles the case of any finite union of nonoverlapping simple regions.
The theorem also reaches regions that fail to be simply-connected, that is, regions with holes in them. Let the boundary of $D$ consist of two simple closed curves, an outer one $C_1$ and an inner one $C_2$, and orient both so that $D$ always stays on the left of a point travelling along the boundary. That single rule forces $C_1$ to run counterclockwise and $C_2$ clockwise.
Now cut $D$ along the two segments drawn below, which splits it into regions $D'$ and $D''$, each already covered by the theorem. Adding the two conclusions, every cut appears twice with opposite directions and therefore cancels, leaving
with $C=C_1\cup C_2$. This is Green's Theorem for the region with a hole, and Example 5 is where it earns its keep.
The section closes by settling a claim left open in §16.3.
Theorem 16.3.6. Let $\mathbf F=P\,\mathbf i+Q\,\mathbf j$ be a vector field on an open simply-connected region $D$, with $P$ and $Q$ possessing continuous first-order partial derivatives there. If
then $\mathbf F$ is conservative.
Green's Theorem supplies the argument in outline: the hypothesis makes the double integral over any region enclosed by a closed path vanish, so every closed line integral of $\mathbf F$ is zero, and Theorem 16.3.3 converts that into independence of path.
Proof (sketch). Let $C$ be any closed path in $D$. If $C$ is simple, then because $D$ is simply-connected the region $R$ it encloses lies entirely inside $D$, and $P,Q$ satisfy the hypotheses of Green's Theorem on an open region containing $R$. Substituting $P_y=Q_x$,
If $C$ is not simple, cut it at the points where it meets itself and break it into finitely many simple closed curves; the line integral over each piece vanishes by the computation above, so the sum $\oint_C\mathbf F\cdot d\mathbf r$ vanishes too. Hence $\oint_C\mathbf F\cdot d\mathbf r=0$ for every closed path $C$ in $D$. (That this last decomposition always terminates after finitely many steps is not examined here; it is precisely why the textbook offers the argument as a sketch rather than a complete proof.)
By Theorem 16.3.3 (independence of path is equivalent to a zero integral around every closed path), this means $\int_C\mathbf F\cdot d\mathbf r$ is independent of path in $D$. Since $D$ is open and connected (a simply-connected region is in particular connected), the hypotheses of Theorem 16.3.4 are met, and that theorem turns path independence into conservativeness. Hence $\mathbf F$ is conservative on $D$.

Compute $\displaystyle\oint_C x^{4}\,dx+xy\,dy$ with Green's Theorem, where the closed path $C$ is assembled from three segments: the one running from $(0,0)$ to $(1,0)$, the one from $(1,0)$ to $(0,1)$, and the one carrying the point back from $(0,1)$ to $(0,0)$.
Solution. With $P=x^4$ and $Q=xy$, $Q_x-P_y=y-0=y$, so Green's Theorem converts the line integral into a double integral over the triangular region $D=\{(x,y)\mid 0\le x\le1,\ 0\le y\le1-x\}$.
Evaluating the inner integral first, $\displaystyle\int_0^{1-x}y\,dy=\frac{(1-x)^2}{2}$, and
Integrating directly along the three sides gives the same value, but that route requires three separate integrals, one per side, and is considerably more work. Hence $\displaystyle\oint_C x^4\,dx+xy\,dy=\frac16$.
그린 정리를 이용하여 $\displaystyle\oint_C\left(3y-e^{\sin x}\right)dx+\left(7x+\sqrt{y^{4}+1}\right)dy$의 값을 구하여라.
$P=3y-e^{\sin x},\ Q=7x+\sqrt{y^4+1}$로 두자.
따라서 $\displaystyle\oint_C\left(3y-e^{\sin x}\right)dx+\left(7x+\sqrt{y^4+1}\right)dy=36\pi$이다.
Evaluate $\displaystyle\oint_C\left(3y-e^{\sin x}\right)dx+\left(7x+\sqrt{y^{4}+1}\right)dy$ by Green's Theorem, taking for $C$ the circle $x^{2}+y^{2}=9$ with its positive orientation.
Solution. Put $P=3y-e^{\sin x}$ and $Q=7x+\sqrt{y^4+1}$. Each component carries a term with no elementary antiderivative ($e^{\sin x}$, $\sqrt{y^4+1}$), which makes a parametrized computation look heavy. What Green's Theorem asks for, however, is not an antiderivative of those terms but a partial derivative, and since $\sqrt{y^4+1}$ holds no $x$ and $e^{\sin x}$ holds no $y$, both terms disappear at that step:
a constant, so for the disk $D$ (of radius $3$) that $C$ encloses,
There is no need even to switch to polar coordinates; knowing that $D$ is a disk of radius $3$ hands over its area directly. Hence $\displaystyle\oint_C\left(3y-e^{\sin x}\right)dx+\left(7x+\sqrt{y^4+1}\right)dy=36\pi$.
Remark. The direct route is not actually blocked. The form $-e^{\sin x}\,dx$ involves $x$ alone and $\sqrt{y^4+1}\,dy$ involves $y$ alone, so both are exact and integrate to $0$ around any closed curve. Only $\oint_C 3y\,dx+7x\,dy$ survives, and $x=3\cos t,\ y=3\sin t$ turns it into $\int_0^{2\pi}(-27\sin^2t+63\cos^2t)\,dt=36\pi$, the same answer. Noticing that shortcut is, however, already the content of Green's Theorem.
타원의 양의 향 경계 $C$를 $x=a\cos t,\ y=b\sin t$ ($0\le t\le2\pi$)로 매개변수화하면 $dx=-a\sin t\,dt$, $dy=b\cos t\,dt$이다.
Determine, by way of one of the area formulas collected in (5), how much area the ellipse $\dfrac{x^{2}}{a^{2}}+\dfrac{y^{2}}{b^{2}}=1$ encloses.
Solution. Parametrize the ellipse's positively oriented boundary $C$ by $x=a\cos t,\ y=b\sin t$ ($0\le t\le2\pi$), so $dx=-a\sin t\,dt$ and $dy=b\cos t\,dt$. Using the symmetric form of (5) requires
from which the area is
The other two forms, $\displaystyle\oint_C x\,dy$ and $\displaystyle-\oint_C y\,dx$, give the same value $\pi ab$, but the symmetric form is the shortest to compute since it collapses immediately via $\cos^2t+\sin^2t=1$. Hence the ellipse encloses area $A=\pi ab$.
이 되고, $\displaystyle\int_0^\pi\sin\theta\,d\theta=\bigl[-\cos\theta\bigr]_0^\pi=2$, $\displaystyle\int_1^2 r^2\,dr=\left[\frac{r^3}{3}\right]_1^2=\frac73$이므로
따라서 $\displaystyle\oint_C y^2\,dx+3xy\,dy=\frac{14}{3}$이다.
Let $D$ be the semiannular region caught between the circles $x^{2}+y^{2}=1$ and $x^{2}+y^{2}=4$ and lying above the $x$-axis, and let $C$ be its positively oriented boundary. Find the value of $\displaystyle\oint_C y^{2}\,dx+3xy\,dy$. Note that $D$ itself is not a simple region, so the extended form of the theorem is what applies.
Solution. With $P=y^2$ and $Q=3xy$, $Q_x-P_y=3y-2y=y$. The region $D$, a semiannulus with inner radius $1$ and outer radius $2$, is not itself simple, but the $y$-axis splits it into two simple regions, so the extended form of Green's Theorem from Card 10 applies.
Switching to polar coordinates $x=r\cos\theta,\ y=r\sin\theta$ ($1\le r\le2,\ 0\le\theta\le\pi$) separates the double integral,
and since $\displaystyle\int_0^\pi\sin\theta\,d\theta=\bigl[-\cos\theta\bigr]_0^\pi=2$ and $\displaystyle\int_1^2 r^2\,dr=\left[\frac{r^3}{3}\right]_1^2=\frac73$,
Hence $\displaystyle\oint_C y^2\,dx+3xy\,dy=\frac{14}{3}$.
벡터장 $\mathbf F(x,y)=\dfrac{-y\,\mathbf i+x\,\mathbf j}{x^{2}+y^{2}}$에 대하여, 원점을 내부에 품는 임의의 양의 향 단순닫힌경로 $C$에서 $\displaystyle\oint_C\mathbf F\cdot d\mathbf r=2\pi$가 성립함을 보여라.
즉 $\displaystyle\oint_C\mathbf F\cdot d\mathbf r=\oint_{C'}\mathbf F\cdot d\mathbf r$이다. $C'$을 $\mathbf r(t)=a\cos t\,\mathbf i+a\sin t\,\mathbf j$ ($0\le t\le2\pi$)로 매개변수화하면 그 위에서 $x^2+y^2=a^2$이므로
Let $\mathbf F(x,y)=\dfrac{-y\,\mathbf i+x\,\mathbf j}{x^{2}+y^{2}}$. Show that $\displaystyle\oint_C\mathbf F\cdot d\mathbf r$ comes out to $2\pi$ whenever $C$ is a positively oriented simple closed path having the origin in its interior.
Proof. Fix any positively oriented simple closed path $C$ having the origin in its interior. Since $\mathbf F$ is undefined at the origin, Green's Theorem cannot be applied directly to the region $C$ encloses. Instead choose a circle $C'$ of radius $a>0$ centered at the origin, small enough to lie entirely inside $C$, traversed counterclockwise, and let $D$ be the region inside $C$ and outside $C'$. Orienting the boundary of $D$ so that $D$ stays on the left gives $\partial D=C\cup(-C')$, exactly the region-with-a-hole setting of Card 11.
Applying the quotient rule to $P=\dfrac{-y}{x^2+y^2}$ and $Q=\dfrac{x}{x^2+y^2}$ shows that at every point of $D$ (which excludes the origin)
so $Q_x-P_y=0$. The extended Green's Theorem for regions with holes then gives
that is, $\displaystyle\oint_C\mathbf F\cdot d\mathbf r=\oint_{C'}\mathbf F\cdot d\mathbf r$. Parametrizing $C'$ by $\mathbf r(t)=a\cos t\,\mathbf i+a\sin t\,\mathbf j$ ($0\le t\le2\pi$), on which $x^2+y^2=a^2$,
so
This value does not depend on the size of $a$, so $\displaystyle\oint_C\mathbf F\cdot d\mathbf r=2\pi$ for every positively oriented simple closed path $C$ enclosing the origin.

A warning about notation — the lecture notes write the conclusion as $\iint_R(N_x-M_y)\,dx\,dy$, whereas Stewart writes $\iint_D(Q_x-P_y)\,dA$. The component letters, the letter naming the plane region, and the symbol for the element of integration all differ, so the two sources need to be read side by side with care.
