(a) $\rho=|OP|$는 $P$가 원점에서 떨어진 거리이고;
(b) $\theta$는 원기둥좌표에서와 똑같은 각으로, $xy$평면에서 잰다;
Spherical Coordinates. A point $P$ in space is located by the triple $(\rho,\theta,\phi)$, in which
(a) $\rho=|OP|$ is how far $P$ lies from the origin;
(b) $\theta$ is the very same angle used in cylindrical coordinates, measured in the $xy$-plane;
(c) $\phi$ is the angle that the segment $OP$ makes with the positive $z$-axis.
These coordinates are restricted by $\rho\ge 0$ and $0\le\phi\le\pi$.
Because $\phi$ is measured from the positive $z$-axis and never exceeds $\pi$, letting $\phi$ run from the north pole to the south pole while $\theta$ runs once around reaches every direction in space (only the two axial directions $\phi=0$ and $\phi=\pi$ come out the same for every $\theta$). The system earns its keep on problems with symmetry about a single point: place the origin there, and a triple integral over a solid whose boundary is made of spheres or cones becomes far easier to set up.
Freezing one coordinate at a value $c$ leaves a surface, and all three of them are familiar shapes. Setting $\rho=c$ gives the sphere of radius $c$ centered at the origin, which is exactly where the name of the system comes from. Setting $\theta=c$ gives a vertical half-plane hinged on the $z$-axis, and setting $\phi=c$ gives a half-cone whose axis is the $z$-axis — opening upward for $0\lt c\lt\pi/2$ and downward for $\pi/2\lt c\lt\pi$. Consequently a solid whose boundary is made of spheres and cones is described in spherical coordinates by nothing more than inequalities between constants.
Equations (1) and (2) — passing between the two coordinate systems. If a point has spherical coordinates $(\rho,\theta,\phi)$ and rectangular coordinates $(x,y,z)$, then
and the distance from the origin satisfies
Equations (1) are the ones to use when a spherical description has to be rewritten in $x$, $y$, $z$; equation (2), which is only the distance formula in disguise, is the starting point in the opposite direction, after which the remaining two angles come from $\cos\phi=z/\rho$ and from (1).
Proof. Let $Q$ be the foot of the perpendicular from $P$ to the $z$-axis, and let $P'$ be the foot of the perpendicular from $P$ to the $xy$-plane. In the right triangle $OPQ$, the right angle sits at $Q$, the hypotenuse is $OP=\rho$, and the angle at $O$ is precisely the angle $\phi$ used to define spherical coordinates; hence $OQ=\rho\cos\phi$ and $QP=\rho\sin\phi$. Since $OQ$ is the $z$-coordinate of $P$ and $QP$ is the distance from $P$ to the $z$-axis — that is, the cylindrical radius $r$ — this reads $z=\rho\cos\phi$ and $r=\rho\sin\phi$. These values also agree with the right triangle $OPP'$ (hypotenuse $OP=\rho$, right angle at $P'$, legs $OP'=r$ and $PP'=|z|$), whose Pythagorean identity $r^2+z^2=\rho^2$ is exactly the statement $\sin^2\phi+\cos^2\phi=1$. (The figure shows the case $0\lt\phi\lt\pi/2$. For $\phi\gt\pi/2$ the point $Q$ falls below the origin, the angle at $O$ in triangle $OPQ$ is $\pi-\phi$, and $OQ=-\rho\cos\phi$, so $z=\rho\cos\phi\lt0$ and the formulas hold with their signs intact; the cases $\phi=0,\pi/2,\pi$ are immediate.)
Meanwhile $P'$ lies in the $xy$-plane, and $\theta$ is by definition the angle that $OP'$ makes with the positive $x$-axis, so exactly as in cylindrical (or polar) coordinates, $x=r\cos\theta$ and $y=r\sin\theta$. Substituting $r=\rho\sin\phi$ turns these into
which together with $z=\rho\cos\phi$ constitute equations (1). Finally, squaring and adding the three equations in (1) gives
which is equation (2) — consistent with the fact that $\rho=|OP|$ was defined via the distance formula in the first place.
The symbols used for spherical coordinates are not standardized. In most physics texts the roles of $\theta$ and $\phi$ are interchanged, so that there $\phi$ is the angle in the $xy$-plane and $\theta$ is the angle measured down from the positive $z$-axis; those texts also write $r$ where this book writes $\rho$. Before borrowing a formula from another source, check which of the two conventions it follows.
단 $a\ge 0$, $\beta-\alpha\le 2\pi$, $d-c\le\pi$를 만족시킨다.
Spherical Wedge. What a rectangular box is to rectangular coordinates, a spherical wedge is to spherical coordinates: a solid on which each coordinate is trapped between two constants,
subject to $a\ge 0$, $\beta-\alpha\le 2\pi$, and $d-c\le\pi$.
Every face of such a solid sits on one of the coordinate surfaces of the previous card: two concentric spheres, two vertical half-planes, two half-cones. The three side conditions keep $\rho$ from going negative and keep the ranges of $\theta$ and $\phi$ from exceeding one full turn and one half-turn respectively, so that no part of the solid gets swept twice.
Triple integrals were defined by cutting a solid into small boxes, but cutting it into small spherical wedges is known to give the same value every time. So cut $E$ with equally spaced spheres $\rho=\rho_i$, half-planes $\theta=\theta_j$, and half-cones $\phi=\phi_k$; the pieces $E_{ijk}$ are so nearly rectangular boxes that their volumes can be read off from their edges. One edge is radial and has length $\Delta\rho$; a second is an arc of a circle of radius $\rho_i$ subtending the angle $\Delta\phi$, hence of length $\rho_i\,\Delta\phi$; the third is an arc of a circle of radius $\rho_i\sin\phi_k$ — the distance from the $z$-axis — subtending $\Delta\theta$, hence of length $\rho_i\sin\phi_k\,\Delta\theta$. Multiplying the three gives
and the Mean Value Theorem (Exercise 51) turns the approximation into an equality at some point $(\tilde\rho_i,\tilde\theta_j,\tilde\phi_k)$ of $E_{ijk}$, namely $\Delta V_{ijk}=\tilde\rho_i^{\,2}\sin\tilde\phi_k\;\Delta\rho\,\Delta\theta\,\Delta\phi$. Substituting this into a triple Riemann sum for $f$ produces an ordinary Riemann sum for the function
on the box $[a,b]\times[\alpha,\beta]\times[c,d]$, and letting the mesh shrink yields formula (3) of the next card. So the factor $\rho^2\sin\phi$ is not decoration: it is the volume of one thin cell.
$E$가 구면 쐐기 $a\le\rho\le b$, $\alpha\le\theta\le\beta$, $c\le\phi\le d$라 하자.
이것은 다름 아니라 직육면체 $[a,b]\times[\alpha,\beta]\times[c,d]$ 위에서 함수 $F(\rho,\theta,\phi)=f(\rho\sin\phi\cos\theta,\rho\sin\phi\sin\theta,\rho\cos\phi)\rho^2\sin\phi$에 대한 통상적인(직교좌표계에서의) 리만 합이다.
Formula (3) — triple integration in spherical coordinates. Let $E$ be the spherical wedge $a\le\rho\le b$, $\alpha\le\theta\le\beta$, $c\le\phi\le d$. Then
Read from the inside out, the iterated integral first sweeps a radial segment, then swings that segment around the $z$-axis into a band lying on a cone, and finally tilts the band from $\phi=c$ down to $\phi=d$ until all of $E$ has been swept out. Note that $\sin\phi\ge 0$ throughout $0\le\phi\le\pi$, so the weight $\rho^2\sin\phi$ never changes sign.
Proof. As in the previous card, cut $E$ with spheres $\rho=\rho_i$, half-planes $\theta=\theta_j$, and half-cones $\phi=\phi_k$ into pieces $E_{ijk}$; the Mean Value Theorem guarantees that at some point $(\tilde\rho_i,\tilde\theta_j,\tilde\phi_k)\in E_{ijk}$,
Building a Riemann sum for $\iiint_E f\,dV$ from this partition, the rectangular coordinates of the representative point of $E_{ijk}$ are $(\tilde\rho_i\sin\tilde\phi_k\cos\tilde\theta_j,\ \tilde\rho_i\sin\tilde\phi_k\sin\tilde\theta_j,\ \tilde\rho_i\cos\tilde\phi_k)$ by equations (1), so the sum reads
This is nothing but an ordinary (rectangular-coordinate) Riemann sum for the function $F(\rho,\theta,\phi)=f(\rho\sin\phi\cos\theta,\rho\sin\phi\sin\theta,\rho\cos\phi)\rho^2\sin\phi$ on the box $[a,b]\times[\alpha,\beta]\times[c,d]$. Taking $f$ continuous on $E$, as is standing practice in this chapter, $F$ is continuous on that box. Hence, as the mesh shrinks ($\Delta\rho,\Delta\theta,\Delta\phi\to0$), this one sum converges on the one hand to $\iiint_E f\,dV$ and on the other to the ordinary triple integral of $F$ over the box. A limit is unique, so
which is precisely equation (3).
In practice formula (3) is applied as a three-step recipe: substitute the expressions of (1) for $x$, $y$, $z$; choose limits that describe the solid in terms of $\rho$, $\theta$, $\phi$; and trade $dV$ for the volume element
The formula is not confined to wedges. If the radial limits are allowed to depend on the two angles, say
then (3) still holds word for word, with the constants $a$ and $b$ in the inner limits replaced by $g_1(\theta,\phi)$ and $g_2(\theta,\phi)$. As a rule of thumb, spherical coordinates are the right choice when the region of integration is bounded by spheres or cones.

구면좌표가 $\left(2,\ \dfrac{\pi}{4},\ \dfrac{\pi}{3}\right)$인 점이 있다.
$\sin\dfrac\pi3=\dfrac{\sqrt3}2$, $\cos\dfrac\pi3=\dfrac12$, $\cos\dfrac\pi4=\sin\dfrac\pi4=\dfrac{\sqrt2}2$이므로
따라서 직교좌표는 $\left(\dfrac{\sqrt6}2,\ \dfrac{\sqrt6}2,\ 1\right)$이다.
A point is described in spherical coordinates by $\left(2,\ \dfrac{\pi}{4},\ \dfrac{\pi}{3}\right)$. Sketch where it sits, and determine its rectangular coordinates.
Solution. Since $\phi=\pi/3\lt\pi/2$, the point lies above the $xy$-plane, and since $\theta=\pi/4$, it sits on the vertical half-plane turned $45^\circ$ counterclockwise from the positive $x$-axis. The rectangular coordinates come from substituting $\rho=2$, $\theta=\pi/4$, $\phi=\pi/3$ into equations (1). With $\sin\dfrac\pi3=\dfrac{\sqrt3}2$, $\cos\dfrac\pi3=\dfrac12$, and $\cos\dfrac\pi4=\sin\dfrac\pi4=\dfrac{\sqrt2}2$,
(Since $\cos\theta=\sin\theta$ at $\theta=\pi/4$, it is expected that $x=y$.) All three coordinates are positive, placing the point in the first octant, which matches the location described above. Hence the rectangular coordinates are $\left(\dfrac{\sqrt6}2,\ \dfrac{\sqrt6}2,\ 1\right)$.
직교좌표가 $\left(0,\ 2\sqrt{3},\ -2\right)$인 점의 구면좌표 $(\rho,\theta,\phi)$를 구하라.
남은 것은 $\theta$인데, $\sin\phi=\sin(2\pi/3)=\sqrt3/2\gt0$이므로 $r=\rho\sin\phi=4\cdot\dfrac{\sqrt3}2=2\sqrt3$이고, 식 (1)은 $x=\rho\sin\phi\cos\theta=r\cos\theta$, $y=\rho\sin\phi\sin\theta=r\sin\theta$를 뜻하므로
따라서 구면좌표는 $(\rho,\theta,\phi)=\left(4,\ \dfrac\pi2,\ \dfrac{2\pi}3\right)$이다.
Determine spherical coordinates $(\rho,\theta,\phi)$ for the point whose rectangular coordinates are $\left(0,\ 2\sqrt{3},\ -2\right)$.
Solution. Find $\rho$ first, from equation (2).
Then $\cos\phi=z/\rho=-2/4=-1/2$, and since cosine is one-to-one on $0\le\phi\le\pi$, $\phi=2\pi/3$ (consistent with $z\lt0$ placing the point below the $xy$-plane, i.e. on the side where $\phi\gt\pi/2$). It remains to find $\theta$: since $\sin\phi=\sin(2\pi/3)=\sqrt3/2\gt0$, $r=\rho\sin\phi=4\cdot\dfrac{\sqrt3}2=2\sqrt3$, and equations (1) read $x=\rho\sin\phi\cos\theta=r\cos\theta$ and $y=\rho\sin\phi\sin\theta=r\sin\theta$, so
Both $\pi/2$ and $3\pi/2$ satisfy $\cos\theta=0$, but only $\theta=\pi/2$ also satisfies $\sin\theta=1\gt0$. Hence the spherical coordinates are $(\rho,\theta,\phi)=\left(4,\ \dfrac\pi2,\ \dfrac{2\pi}3\right)$.
첫 두 인자는 $\displaystyle\int_0^\pi\sin\phi\,d\phi=\bigl[-\cos\phi\bigr]_0^\pi=2$, $\displaystyle\int_0^{2\pi}d\theta=2\pi$이다.
Let $B$ denote the unit ball $B=\{(x,y,z)\mid x^2+y^2+z^2\le 1\}$. Compute the triple integral
Solution. In spherical coordinates the unit ball is the spherical wedge $0\le\rho\le1$, $0\le\theta\le2\pi$, $0\le\phi\le\pi$. Since $x^2+y^2+z^2=\rho^2$, the integrand becomes $e^{(\rho^2)^{3/2}}=e^{\rho^3}$, which separates completely into the three variables — a typical instance of a function with no elementary antiderivative in rectangular coordinates becoming manageable once written in spherical ones. By formula (3),
The first two factors are $\displaystyle\int_0^\pi\sin\phi\,d\phi=\bigl[-\cos\phi\bigr]_0^\pi=2$ and $\displaystyle\int_0^{2\pi}d\theta=2\pi$. For the last factor, substitute $u=\rho^3$, $du=3\rho^2\,d\rho$:
Multiplying the three factors gives $2\cdot2\pi\cdot\dfrac13(e-1)=\dfrac{4\pi}3(e-1)$. Hence $\displaystyle\iiint_B e^{(x^2+y^2+z^2)^{3/2}}\,dV=\dfrac{4\pi}3(e-1)$.
Working in spherical coordinates, compute the volume of the solid trapped above the cone $z=\sqrt{x^2+y^2}$ and inside the sphere $x^2+y^2+z^2=z$.
Solution. Rewrite the two bounding surfaces in spherical coordinates first. The sphere $x^2+y^2+z^2=z$ becomes $\rho^2=\rho\cos\phi$, so away from $\rho=0$, $\rho=\cos\phi$ (this is the sphere of radius $\tfrac12$ centered at $(0,0,\tfrac12)$, passing through the origin). For the cone $z=\sqrt{x^2+y^2}$, note that $\sqrt{x^2+y^2}=\rho\sin\phi$ because $\sin\phi\ge0$ on $0\le\phi\le\pi$; the equation therefore reads $\rho\cos\phi=\rho\sin\phi$, so away from $\rho=0$, $\cos\phi=\sin\phi$, i.e. $\phi=\pi/4$. Lying above the cone, $z\ge\sqrt{x^2+y^2}$, becomes $\rho\cos\phi\ge\rho\sin\phi$ by the same computation, i.e. $\cos\phi\ge\sin\phi$ when $\rho\gt0$, and on $0\le\phi\le\pi$ that says exactly $\phi\le\pi/4$. Lying inside the sphere, $x^2+y^2+z^2\le z$, becomes $\rho\le\cos\phi$, and $\theta$ is unrestricted. So the solid is
Taking $f=1$ in formula (3),
For the inner integral, substitute $u=\cos\phi$, $du=-\sin\phi\,d\phi$, so $\displaystyle\int\sin\phi\cos^3\phi\,d\phi=-\frac{\cos^4\phi}4+C$, and
Substituting back, $V(E)=\dfrac{2\pi}3\cdot\dfrac3{16}=\dfrac{2\pi}{16}=\dfrac\pi8$. Hence the volume of the solid is $\dfrac\pi8$.
