NOTE 곡면 넓이 문제 The Surface Area ProblemSection opening · p.1117

English

Double integrals now serve a new geometric purpose: measuring how much area a surface carries. One special case was settled long ago — Section 8.2 obtained the area of a surface of revolution by single-variable methods. The object of this section is instead the graph of a function of two variables: $S$ is the surface $z=f(x,y)$, with $(x,y)$ running over a plane region $D$, and $f$ is assumed to have continuous partial derivatives $f_x$ and $f_y$.

A far wider class of surfaces, the parametric surfaces, together with their areas, is treated in Section 16.6; the formula found here is a special case of the one found there. A reader who will study that section may therefore skip this one.

$$P_{ij}\bigl(x_i,\ y_j,\ f(x_i,y_j)\bigr)$$

English

To keep the derivation short, assume $f(x,y)\ge 0$ and let the domain $D$ be a rectangle. Cut $D$ into small rectangles $R_{ij}$, each of area $\Delta A=\Delta x\,\Delta y$. Write $(x_i,y_j)$ for the corner of $R_{ij}$ nearest the origin, and let

$$P_{ij}\bigl(x_i,\ y_j,\ f(x_i,y_j)\bigr)$$

be the point of $S$ sitting straight above that corner.

Near $P_{ij}$ the tangent plane at $P_{ij}$ is a good stand-in for $S$. The piece of that plane lying straight over $R_{ij}$ is a parallelogram; write $\Delta T_{ij}$ for its area, and write $\Delta S_{ij}$ for the area of the piece of $S$ lying straight over $R_{ij}$. Then $\Delta T_{ij}$ approximates $\Delta S_{ij}$, so the sum of all the $\Delta T_{ij}$ approximates the total area of $S$, and shrinking the rectangles appears to sharpen that approximation.

$$A(S)=\lim_{m,n\to\infty}\sum_{i=1}^{m}\sum_{j=1}^{n}\Delta T_{ij}.\tag{1}$$

English

Definition (1) — Surface area. Let $S$ be the surface $z=f(x,y)$ over $D$, and let $\Delta T_{ij}$ be the tangent-plane parallelogram areas described above. The surface area of $S$ is defined to be

$$A(S)=\lim_{m,n\to\infty}\sum_{i=1}^{m}\sum_{j=1}^{n}\Delta T_{ij}.\tag{1}$$

The limit refines the partition in both directions at once, exactly as in the double integral of Section 15.1. Only the summand is new: in place of a sampled value of a function times $\Delta A$ stands the area of one flat piece of tangent plane.

Computing the Tangent-Plane Area by a Cross ProductFigure 2 · p.1118

$$\mathbf a=\Delta x\,\mathbf i+f_x(x_i,y_j)\,\Delta x\,\mathbf k,$$
$$\mathbf b=\Delta y\,\mathbf j+f_y(x_i,y_j)\,\Delta y\,\mathbf k.$$

$$\mathbf a\times\mathbf b=\begin{vmatrix}\mathbf i & \mathbf j & \mathbf k\\[2pt] \Delta x & 0 & f_x(x_i,y_j)\,\Delta x\\[2pt] 0 & \Delta y & f_y(x_i,y_j)\,\Delta y\end{vmatrix}=\bigl[-f_x(x_i,y_j)\,\mathbf i-f_y(x_i,y_j)\,\mathbf j+\mathbf k\bigr]\Delta A.$$

$$\Delta T_{ij}=|\mathbf a\times\mathbf b|=\sqrt{[f_x(x_i,y_j)]^2+[f_y(x_i,y_j)]^2+1}\;\Delta A.$$

English

Equation (1) defines the area but is not convenient for computation, so the next step is a closed form for $\Delta T_{ij}$. Let $\mathbf a$ and $\mathbf b$ be the two edge vectors of the parallelogram that start at $P_{ij}$ (see the figure in the previous card); the area of a parallelogram is the length of the cross product of its edge vectors, so $\Delta T_{ij}=|\mathbf a\times\mathbf b|$.

Section 14.3 tells us what those edge vectors are: $f_x(x_i,y_j)$ and $f_y(x_i,y_j)$ are the slopes of the tangent lines drawn at $P_{ij}$ in the directions of $\mathbf a$ and of $\mathbf b$. Hence

$$\mathbf a=\Delta x\,\mathbf i+f_x(x_i,y_j)\,\Delta x\,\mathbf k,$$
$$\mathbf b=\Delta y\,\mathbf j+f_y(x_i,y_j)\,\Delta y\,\mathbf k.$$

Expanding the cross product as a determinant and using $\Delta x\,\Delta y=\Delta A$,

$$\mathbf a\times\mathbf b=\begin{vmatrix}\mathbf i & \mathbf j & \mathbf k\\[2pt] \Delta x & 0 & f_x(x_i,y_j)\,\Delta x\\[2pt] 0 & \Delta y & f_y(x_i,y_j)\,\Delta y\end{vmatrix}=\bigl[-f_x(x_i,y_j)\,\mathbf i-f_y(x_i,y_j)\,\mathbf j+\mathbf k\bigr]\Delta A.$$

Taking lengths turns this into the area of the parallelogram:

$$\Delta T_{ij}=|\mathbf a\times\mathbf b|=\sqrt{[f_x(x_i,y_j)]^2+[f_y(x_i,y_j)]^2+1}\;\Delta A.$$

So each tangent-plane piece is the flat cell $\Delta A$ stretched by the factor $\sqrt{f_x^2+f_y^2+1}$, a factor that depends only on the slopes at the sample point.

방정식 $z=f(x,y)$, $(x,y)\in D$로 주어지는 곡면의 넓이는

$$A(S)=\iint_D\sqrt{[f_x(x,y)]^2+[f_y(x,y)]^2+1}\;dA.\tag{2}$$

$$\Delta T_{ij}=\sqrt{[f_x(x_i,y_j)]^2+[f_y(x_i,y_j)]^2+1}\;\Delta A$$

$$A(S)=\lim_{m,n\to\infty}\sum_{i=1}^{m}\sum_{j=1}^{n}\sqrt{[f_x(x_i,y_j)]^2+[f_y(x_i,y_j)]^2+1}\;\Delta A.$$

$$A(S)=\iint_D\sqrt{[f_x(x,y)]^2+[f_y(x,y)]^2+1}\;dA.$$

$\square$
English

Formula (2) — Area of the surface $z=f(x,y)$. Let $f_x$ and $f_y$ be continuous. The surface with equation $z=f(x,y)$, $(x,y)\in D$, has area

$$A(S)=\iint_D\sqrt{[f_x(x,y)]^2+[f_y(x,y)]^2+1}\;dA.\tag{2}$$

The integrand is the stretching factor of the previous card, now evaluated at a running point of $D$. That factor never drops below $1$. Where the surface is horizontal the factor equals $1$ and the piece there carries exactly the area of its shadow (for a surface that is horizontal everywhere, $A(S)$ is just the area of $D$); where the surface is steep the factor grows, and the surface carries more area than its shadow.

Proof. Substitute the result of Card 4 directly into Definition (1). The area of the tangent-plane piece over the sample point $(x_i,y_j)$ was

$$\Delta T_{ij}=\sqrt{[f_x(x_i,y_j)]^2+[f_y(x_i,y_j)]^2+1}\;\Delta A,$$

so the surface area becomes

$$A(S)=\lim_{m,n\to\infty}\sum_{i=1}^{m}\sum_{j=1}^{n}\sqrt{[f_x(x_i,y_j)]^2+[f_y(x_i,y_j)]^2+1}\;\Delta A.$$

The right side is exactly a Riemann sum for the function $g(x,y)=\sqrt{[f_x(x,y)]^2+[f_y(x,y)]^2+1}$: evaluate $g$ at the sample point $(x_i,y_j)$, multiply by $\Delta A$, and add. Since $f_x,f_y$ are continuous, $g$ is continuous on $D$, so by the definition of the double integral from Section 15.1 this limit equals the double integral of $g$ over $D$. Hence

$$A(S)=\iint_D\sqrt{[f_x(x,y)]^2+[f_y(x,y)]^2+1}\;dA.$$

Card 2 took $D$ to be a rectangle, so what the argument covers directly is a rectangular domain. For a general $D$, enclose it in a rectangle and extend the integrand by $0$ outside $D$, exactly as in Section 15.2; the same conclusion follows.

$$A(S)=\iint_D\sqrt{1+\left(\frac{\partial z}{\partial x}\right)^2+\left(\frac{\partial z}{\partial y}\right)^2}\,dA.\tag{3}$$

$$L=\int_a^b\sqrt{1+\left(\frac{dy}{dx}\right)^2}\,dx,$$

English

Written with the $\partial$-notation for partial derivatives, Formula (2) reads

$$A(S)=\iint_D\sqrt{1+\left(\frac{\partial z}{\partial x}\right)^2+\left(\frac{\partial z}{\partial y}\right)^2}\,dA.\tag{3}$$

Set this beside the arc length formula of Section 8.1,

$$L=\int_a^b\sqrt{1+\left(\frac{dy}{dx}\right)^2}\,dx,$$

and the parallel is hard to miss: a single derivative under the radical becomes two partial derivatives, and integration over an interval becomes integration over a plane region. In both cases the radical measures how much longer, or larger, the graph is than its projection.

That Formula (2) does not conflict with the formula for the area of a surface of revolution obtained in Section 8.2 is verified in Section 16.6.

Surface Area over a Triangular RegionExample 1 · p.1119

$$\sqrt{(2x)^2+2^2+1}=\sqrt{4x^2+5}$$

$$A(S)=\int_0^1\!\!\int_0^x\sqrt{4x^2+5}\;dy\,dx=\int_0^1 x\sqrt{4x^2+5}\;dx.$$

$$\int_0^1 x\sqrt{4x^2+5}\,dx=\frac18\int_5^9\sqrt{u}\,du=\frac18\cdot\frac23\Bigl[u^{3/2}\Bigr]_5^9=\frac{1}{12}\bigl(27-5\sqrt5\bigr).$$

따라서 $A(S)=\dfrac{1}{12}\bigl(27-5\sqrt5\bigr)\approx1.318$이다.

English

Let $T$ be the triangular region of the $xy$-plane whose vertices are $(0,0)$, $(1,0)$ and $(1,1)$. Find the area of the portion of the surface $z=x^2+2y+2$ that lies directly above $T$.

Solution. Since $f(x,y)=x^2+2y+2$, we have $f_x=2x$ and $f_y=2$, so the integrand in Formula (2) is

$$\sqrt{(2x)^2+2^2+1}=\sqrt{4x^2+5}.$$

The three sides of $T$ are $y=0$ ($0\le x\le1$), $x=1$ ($0\le y\le1$), and the diagonal $y=x$ joining $(0,0)$ to $(1,1)$. Since that diagonal is the upper boundary, $T$ is the type I region

$$T=\{(x,y)\mid 0\le x\le1,\ 0\le y\le x\}.$$

The integrand does not involve $y$, so taking $y$ as the inner variable finishes the inner integral at once:

$$A(S)=\int_0^1\!\!\int_0^x\sqrt{4x^2+5}\;dy\,dx=\int_0^1 x\sqrt{4x^2+5}\;dx.$$

Substituting $u=4x^2+5$ gives $du=8x\,dx$, and $x=0,1$ correspond to $u=5,9$, so

$$\int_0^1 x\sqrt{4x^2+5}\,dx=\frac18\int_5^9\sqrt{u}\,du=\frac18\cdot\frac23\Bigl[u^{3/2}\Bigr]_5^9=\frac{1}{12}\bigl(27-5\sqrt5\bigr).$$

Hence $A(S)=\dfrac{1}{12}\bigl(27-5\sqrt5\bigr)\approx1.318$.

$$\sqrt{(2x)^2+(2y)^2+1}=\sqrt{1+4(x^2+y^2)}$$

$$A(S)=\int_0^{2\pi}\!\!\int_0^3\sqrt{1+4r^2}\,r\,dr\,d\theta.$$

$$\int_0^3 r\sqrt{1+4r^2}\,dr=\frac18\int_1^{37}\sqrt{w}\,dw=\frac18\cdot\frac23\Bigl[w^{3/2}\Bigr]_1^{37}=\frac{1}{12}\bigl(37\sqrt{37}-1\bigr).$$

$$A(S)=2\pi\cdot\frac{1}{12}\bigl(37\sqrt{37}-1\bigr)=\frac{\pi}{6}\bigl(37\sqrt{37}-1\bigr).$$

따라서 $A(S)=\dfrac{\pi}{6}\bigl(37\sqrt{37}-1\bigr)\approx117.319$이다.

English

The plane $z=9$ slices the paraboloid $z=x^2+y^2$. Determine the area of the portion of the paraboloid lying below that plane.

Solution. Since $f(x,y)=x^2+y^2$, we have $f_x=2x$ and $f_y=2y$, so the integrand in Formula (2) is

$$\sqrt{(2x)^2+(2y)^2+1}=\sqrt{1+4(x^2+y^2)}.$$

The plane $z=9$ meets the paraboloid along $x^2+y^2=9$, $z=9$, so the piece of the paraboloid in question lies exactly over the disk

$$D=\{(x,y)\mid x^2+y^2\le9\},$$

a disk of radius $3$. Since the integrand depends only on $x^2+y^2$ and $D$ itself is a disk, switching to polar coordinates $x=r\cos\theta$, $y=r\sin\theta$, $dA=r\,dr\,d\theta$ cuts the work substantially.

$$A(S)=\int_0^{2\pi}\!\!\int_0^3\sqrt{1+4r^2}\,r\,dr\,d\theta.$$

The integrand does not involve $\theta$, so the outer integral simply contributes a factor of $2\pi$. What remains is the inner integral with $w=1+4r^2$: $dw=8r\,dr$, and $r=0,3$ correspond to $w=1,37$, so

$$\int_0^3 r\sqrt{1+4r^2}\,dr=\frac18\int_1^{37}\sqrt{w}\,dw=\frac18\cdot\frac23\Bigl[w^{3/2}\Bigr]_1^{37}=\frac{1}{12}\bigl(37\sqrt{37}-1\bigr).$$

Multiplying by $2\pi$,

$$A(S)=2\pi\cdot\frac{1}{12}\bigl(37\sqrt{37}-1\bigr)=\frac{\pi}{6}\bigl(37\sqrt{37}-1\bigr).$$

Hence $A(S)=\dfrac{\pi}{6}\bigl(37\sqrt{37}-1\bigr)\approx117.319$.
